Upon first starting this website I also started something I called The Aubreyad Press Gang to do a group read of the series. We got through the first and second novels before the project fell by the wayside, but the discussion questions remain. Perhaps someday the APG will set sail once more…

1. Why are the East India Company’s naval-like pretensions vexing to the Royal Navy? Also, why would anyone want to serve in the Royal Navy when the EIC offers twice the pay and more spacious berths?
2. What relationship does the story of the finwhale have to the plot of the novel up to this point, if any?
3. Is Jack’s silence about his status with the Royal Navy something of a ruse de guerre or dishonorable? Is withholding information the same as lying in this case? What is the danger to Jack in Corunna now that he’s known as an officer?
4. What is meant by Jack’s recollection of “the playing of the D minor trio – Diana’s rough glissando and the deep sustaining note of the ‘cello, as they played three-handed”?
