Master and Commander Discussion Questions Ch. 8

Actual footage of the APG forcing their friends to read the Aubreyad! For their own good (and the good of the service) of course.

Upon first starting this website I also started something I called The Aubreyad Press Gang to do a group read of the series. We got through the first and second novels before the project fell by the wayside, but the discussion questions remain. Perhaps someday the APG will set sail once more…

The Aubreyad Press Gang Epic Adventure Week Five

1. At the beginning of this chapter, Jack has an imaginary conversation with Stephen about Dillon. What does this say about Jack’s feelings for Stephen? If Stephen had been there, would Jack have said anything? What would Stephen have answered?

2. What does Stephen see as the difference between discussing the Sophie’s enemies and discussing her prey? Does Jack see the same distinction? What does this exchange say about their respective characters?

3. After Dillon explains about the situation with the John B. Christopher to Stephen, Stephen writes his thoughts about Dillon’s relationship with Jack in his journal. However, it apparently doesn’t occur to him that if he had not been away he would have been the one sent to search the American ship. How would Stephen had behaved in such circumstances? Would he be affected in the same way as Dillon?

4. What are Jack’s feelings for Molly Harte and hers for him? How does this effect his relationship with her husband, and how might it effect his career?

Questions by your captain.
